"Tree of Fire" by Adonis, Contemporary World Poetry, p. 286
The tree by the river
is weeping leaves.
It strews the shore
with tear after tear.
It reads to the river
its prophecy of fire.
I am that final
leaf that no one
sees
My people
have died as fires
die--without a trace.
"Pool of Hair," by Darren Delfosse
The dog by the pool
is shedding fur.
It tufts the air
with shred after shred.
It spells out its allergies
to the ool.
Notice there's no P in it.
Let's try and keep it
that way.
I've lost
dogs just as I've receded
hair--in handfuls.
